Thompson Surveying Consultants were overjoyed to be involved in the restoration and renovation of a Bunbury Icon in the Bunbury Grain Silos into the Silos Apartments, an eight storey luxury residential apartment.
Thompson’s involvement in this project can be considered in three stages – design, construction and strata subdivision.
During the design stage, we were engaged to check many aspects of the existing heritage listed silos structure, including the verticality and height of the grain storage bins. This information proved critical for the designers in firstly ensuring that the structure would initially be suitable for the planned development and secondly provided important information which allowed the design of the individual levels.
When construction was to begin we were engaged by Perth based building and construction Company Arccon to provide setout for the construction. As the silo structure already existed, our key roles in this Stage 1 development was to setout the windows to be cut out and this provided unique challenges as the structure consists of four cylindrical silos, eight storeys high. We were also engaged by Arccon to provide surveying services for the next stage of the development which involved the construction of 25 residential apartments and 64 short stay units adjacent to the Silo Apartments.
